Treatment Information

DERMAPLANING

This is a procedure designed to create smoother skin. It works by removing the very top layers of your skin and the small vellus (fuzzy) hairs by exfoliating the skin with a blade. It is a gentle, low-risk procedure with little to no downtime afterwards. This treatment is effective for people looking to make their skin appear more youthful, smooth, and bright; results typically last about three to four weeks. An additional benefit is that it can remove blackheads and other dead skin cells crowding the surface of the skin.

Side effects may include slight redness in your face in the first few days after treatment and your skin will be very sensitive so its important to not use any exfoliant for 72 hours post treatment. Make up, swimming, steam rooms and sunbeds should be avoided for 48 hours and SPF of at least 50 should be worn for at least a week post treatment.

Infection and scarring are exceptionally rare after dermaplaning, but they do occur. I use a high grade cleanser and antiseptic to clean your skin prior to treatment so as to limit any potential risk.

This treatment can be combined with chemical peels and micro/nano needling so as to enhance results as right after dermaplaning your skin is more able to absorb products more deeply. It is also a great treatment to use in conjunction with microdermabrasion for a super exfoliation treatment.

To dispel myths there is no risk of the hair growing back thicker or darker, due to the nature of this treatment it is only the baby hairs that are removed therefore it is impossible for them to grow back any different. If you do have any troubled areas with dark, thick hair then this treatment is not a suitable procedure for removal and you may need to seek other services.

This is also a lovely treatment to have prior to a big event as your make up will be applied much easier, it will sit smoother and last longer on your face. It is a firm favourite of mine!

MICRONEEdLING

This treatment is designed to assist with the production of new collagen and elastin tissue to make the face appear brighter, tighter, smoother and give a more ‘plumped’ and toned appearance. We activate this production by tapping into the body’s own natural defence system. The treatment is invasive as I use a special pen with small, sterile needles to gently prick the skins’ surface; working in a serum for deeper penetration and absorption. The depth penetrated is a maximum of 1.5mm so roughly the depth of your fingernail. It is not painful but can be uncomfortable for some clients. I use a topical numbing cream prior to the treatment to limit any discomfort and of course you can take analgesics if you would also prefer (read manufacturers instructions).

This treatment is really beneficial in helping to reduce the appearance of acne, scars, dark spots, wrinkle and larger pores. It can also help tighten sagging skin around the cheek or jowl area.

This treatment is invasive but requires little to no downtime, although you can experience minor redness and irritation for a few days. There are two types of set of needles which can be used depending on the desired results; therefore you may have nanoneedling as opposed to microneedling, however the treatment process is the same. Both treatments are considered safe for most people who are in overall good health; however they are not suitable for people who use certain acne medications, for those with active acne, or for those with moderate to severe psoriasis or eczema.

You can go back to work immediately after the procedure if you’re comfortable however it is best to let your skin heal before applying makeup. Your skin will also be more sensative to the sun so using an SPF of at least 50 every day is recommended. There must also be no sunbeds, harsh cleansers or exfoliants for one week post treatment. Results should be visible within a couple weeks, however it recommended that you have a series of treatments to achieve the best results. This treatment can be combined with Dermaplaning for the best results.

CHEMICAL (SKIN) PEELS

Are used to remove damaged skin cells, revealing the healthier, new skin underneath. They are used to improve the appearance and feel of the skin and can be used to treat wrinkles and fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone or redness and melasma. Chemical peels are exceptionally safe however it is essential that after care advice is followed.

There are 3 different types of peels: light, medium, and deep. In my clinic only light (superficial) peels are performed as these do not require much downtime for recovery and are associated with less risk of severe side effects.

Before a chemical peel, you must NOT use any type of retinol or retin-A topical medication for at least 48 hours or have taken Accutane for at least six months. It is also recommend that you stop waxing, epilating, or using depilatory hair removal products the week before the peel. You should also avoid hair bleaching and stop using facial scrubs and exfoliants the week before the peel.

Common side effects are temporary, and include redness, dryness, stinging or burning, and slight swelling. Recovery time for a light peel is 4-7 days, your skin may temporarily be lighter or darker, but effects of the peel should not be noticeable to anyone else (you will not experience burnt, bright red and peeling skin - this is only in the movies!) It is rare but more serious risks and dangerous side effects can be permanent. These can include a darkening or lightening of the skin colour (more common in people with darker skin tones), scarring and very rarely, chemical peels can cause fungal or bacterial infections.

This treatment can be combined with dermaplaning for fuller, longer lasting effects. A course of 5-6 treatments are often recommended with at least 4 weeks in between for longer lasting and the best results, but this will be discussed at your initial consultation.

MICRODERMABRASION

Is a minimally invasive procedure used to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma and other skin-related concerns and conditions. The procedure uses a special applicator (pen) with an abrasive surface to gently ‘sand’ away the thick outer layer of the skin giving a deep exfoliation. Microdermabrasion is considered a safe procedure for most skin types and tones and there is very little you need to do to prepare for it; however is it good to avoid sun exposure, tanning creams, and waxing for about a week before treatment. You should also stop using exfoliating creams and masks for 4 days prior to treatment.

A diamond-tip handpiece is designed to gently exfoliate dead cells in your skin and at the same time, it will suction them off immediately. At the end of the treatment, a moisturiser as well as sunscreen will be applied to your skin. The depth of the abrasion may be affected by the pressure applied on the handpiece as well as how long the suction is allowed to remain on the skin.

Common side effects of microdermabrasion include mild tenderness, swelling, and redness. This will generally resolve within a few hours after treatment, minor bruising may also occur and will reduce in a day or so (if it occurs). There is little to no downtime after microdermabrasion but you should keep your skin hydrated and use gentle skin care products. Avoid using topical acne medications for at least one day after treatment. It’s extremely important to protect your skin with sunscreen as your skin can be more sensitive to the sun in the few weeks after the treatment.

You can expect to see noticeable results immediately after the procedure. The number of microdermabrasion sessions needed will depend on the severity of your skin concerns as well as your expectations.

LED LIGHT THERAPY

LED Light Therapy or light emitting diode therapy, is a skincare treatment that uses varying wavelengths of light to stimulate collagen and elastin production, reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing process. It very much supports a non-ablative and non-invasive ethos to treating the skin; by working with the skin to encourage its own natural healing process. Different wavelengths of light have the ability to stimulate different enzyme reactions that have a different effect on the skin, the light works to energies cells in the skin to produce collagen, improve elasticity and increase blood circulation and oxygen flow while releasing toxins.

Until it’s discovery by NASA, the only real way of stimulating collagen production was either using ingredients such as retinoid or through controlled wounding, thus stimulating the body’s own wound healing response. LED light therapy is a safe, painless and effective way of stimulating collagen and elastin production. Studies confirm that the same LED energy can be used to inhibit collagen formation, which can be helpful in the treatment of scars by manipulating the wave lengths, cells can be turned on and off.

Unlike other types of light therapy, LEDs do not contain any UV rays therefore it is completely safe; however you cannot have LED light therapy if you take Accutane or if you are experiencing skin rashes. Side effects are very rare but may include increased inflammation, redness and rashes.

It is recommended that you have a course of 10 treatments over 10 weeks, followed by once every few months for the best results. This treatment can be added to any facial or other treatment (apart from chemical peel) to really enhance results and quicken your skin goal journey.

PREGNANCY, ANTE/POST NATAL MASSAGE

Is a safe and beneficial treatment for mum-to-be and baby. It can be emotionally as well as physiologically supportive to a woman during a time when her body is undergoing many changes and can help to prepare the body for birth. There is ample evidence which supports the tremendous benefits of a pregnancy massage. It can help alleviate aches and pains and other common health problems associated with pregnancy. Preparing for the arrival of a new baby brings much excitement, but also plenty of stress and massage can help to reduce stress levels due to its calming effect; it ALSO benefits the baby due to the oxytocin (feel good hormones) that are released when the mother is massaged.

Massage in general and while pregnant can help with: simulation of circulation, lymphatic drainage (helping with those swollen legs and ankles), sluggish bowel movement, reduce instances of varicose veins, deeper relaxation, reduce emotional stress, reduce blood pressure and encourages the production of oxytocin (the feel good hormones). Postnatal massage can help to soothe a tired body and mind, help to reduce post birth aches and pains and to let mum have some very well deserved ‘me time'.

As a registered midwife I fully understand and appreciate the wonderfulness of pregnancy as well as all the niggles and issues that it can bring and I aim to provide a holistic service during the massage session, taking into account mum’s stresses, anxieties and individual needs. I offer a course of massages for mum’s to be to be used over a 12 month period which will take into account her changing body throughout all stages of the perinatal period.

*Please note that NO midwifery care, services or advice will be carried out/given during this time; massage is not suitable in the first trimester or in the first 6 weeks postnatally*.

Dragon’s Blood Facial

Dragon’s Blood is a bright red resin from a tree and the sap has been used for medicinal purposes since the Roman Empire. The skin plumping products are marketed as an alternative to dermal fillers; known as the so called “liquid facelift”. Peptides and hyaluronic acid are added to make the product really high quality and grade and now Dragon’s Blood is a popular product used and endorsed by celebrities all over the world.

The benefits of a dragon’s blood are that it is anti-ageing, hydrates the skin, plumps the skin, makes skin appear more tighter and lifted and is a natural products so is safe to use on almost all skin types and tones. It can also help to reduce redness and irritation giving overall amazing results.

In my clinic you can enjoy a dragon’s blood facial adding the products on to a standard facial treatment or we can ‘upgrade’ your micro/nano needling treatment to include this wonderful product.
